Hurricane Sandy Forces Mitt Romney To Eat His Words About Rising Oceans

Remember that patronizing remark Presidential candidate Mitt Romney made about climate change and rising ocean levels? It was at the 2012 Republican National Convention, where Romney probably felt confident that his climate denying jokes would fall on friendly ears. Here’s what he said: “President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family.” How the attendees of the RNC slapped their knees in laughter at that one! Fast-forward a few months and the devastation of Hurricane Sandy has silenced the glee.

As scores of scientists have cautioned for years, storms like Hurricane Sandy will become more common every year we refuse to take action on climate change. Cities at or below sea level, and there are quite a few of them on both coasts, will continue to suffer as warming oceans creep closer and closer to their doorstep. Eventually, the waters may not recede, and who will be laughing when millions are permanently displaced because we couldn’t be bothered with the realities of human-induced climate change?

Forecast the Facts put together the above video, remixing Romney’s ill-advised jab with Hurricane Sandy footage. Keep it in mind as you visit the polls in a few days. Extreme weather, bolstered by our addiction to fossil fuels, is no joke. How many more people have to die, or homes have to be destroyed, until we’re willing to change?
